Final Blog Post of the Semester
Nelson Mandela
This quote means that your motivation, strength, and courage to keep going after you have failed so many time is what really matter and counts. Yes, success may be nice but anyone can have it. If you struggle and work your hardest to achieve something it's value will multiply by 100s.
If I had to struggle for something to go right and it does, it will be more appreciative and really value what I have archived more that other things I have accomplished. It's not the fact that others judge you it's more of how you feel about what you achieved. It may of took many tries and a lot of time but in the end it is all worth it.

Quote of the Week and Thanksgiving Weekend!
I think what JFK meant by this quote was that actions are louder than words and I agree. Anyone can just say nice things or say they will do things but by them showing it will speak for its self. I think this quote says it all, be about it or don't say anything about it. I try to live by this quote. To me actions do speak louder than words and when I see this in a person they have my respect and gratitude. Also when it's the holidays gifts isn't the gift someone must give to you I think time being spent is more valuable and cherishing the moments spent together is priceless.
For Thanks Giving I'm going to spend it with my family at my moms sisters house. My grandparents will be there and my grandma will make all the delicious food we will eat, she's the best cook ever! My grandparents came from Guatemala last night so I'm looking forward to seeing them. We will just enjoy each others company and feast. I will pretty much be with family and do college apps. I am thankful for my grandparents coming all this way and the food we will be blessed with. I am thankful for everything I have and the people I have in my life.

Serving your community (part II)
The problem that my proposal will address is how most of our elderly adults are in retirement homes or are being taken care of at home and could be or are secretly abused by their care takers.
Anyone can be affected by abuse of their care takers but elderly are more prone to this abuse like infants because they can't defend themselves.
Elder abuse, like other types of domestic violence, is extremely complex. Generally a combination of psychological, social, and economic factors, along with the mental and physical conditions of the victim and the perpetrator, contribute to the occurrence of elder maltreatment.
- Physical Abuse—Inflicting, or threatening to inflict, physical pain or injury on a vulnerable elder, or depriving them of a basic need.
- Emotional Abuse—Inflicting mental pain, anguish, or distress on an elder person through verbal or nonverbal acts.
- Sexual Abuse—Non-consensual sexual contact of any kind, coercing an elder to witness sexual behaviors.
- Exploitation—Illegal taking, misuse, or concealment of funds, property, or assets of a vulnerable elder.
- Neglect—Refusal or failure by those responsible to provide food, shelter, health care or protection for a vulnerable elder.
- Abandonment—The desertion of a vulnerable elder by anyone who has assumed the responsibility for care or custody of that person.

Current Bills in Congress
- Sponsor: Rep Speier, Jackie [CA-14] (introduced 2/26/2013)
- San Francisco Bay Restoration Act - Amends the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (commonly known as the Clean Water Act) to authorize the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to provide funding to state and local agencies, special districts, and public or nonprofit agencies, institutions, and organizations for activities, studies, or projects identified in an annual priority list, including restoration projects and habitat improvement for fish, waterfowl, and wildlife, that advance the goals and objectives of the comprehensive management plan for the San Francisco estuary. Limits funding amounts to 75% of the total cost of eligible activities to be carried out using those amounts. Authorizes appropriations to the Administrator to carry out this Act for each of FY2013-FY20. Prohibits such amounts from being used by a management conference under the National Estuary Program.
- restoration projects and habitat improvement for fish, waterfowl, and wildlife, that advance the goals and objectives of the comprehensive management plan for the San Francisco estuary.
- This bill is for the benefit of the environment and the animals that are becoming scarce because we have taken over their homes. They are dying off because there is no space for them or food for them.
- Status: Referred to the Subcommittee on Water Resources and Environment.
Committee/Subcommittee: | Activity: | |

If we lose our natural habitats it can impact our environment in a negative ways. So it's in our best interest to stay aware of how our environment is doing and how we can help stay healthy or ways we can improve it. |

Getting Back On Track!
2. My academic goals to achieve before thanksgiving is finish Phoenix and submit my college applications. So far classes at M-A are the worst I have had so far. I miss some classes from last year but this year the classes are down the toilet. I'm not so worried about the classes it more of the fact that no one is organized. Wish things could be better but they won't so I have to stick it out with what I'm stuck with.

College financial aid drops - families pinched
That's because less financial aid was available to them, concludes a study released Wednesday by the College Board.
The numbers could help explain why families still feel squeezed even though the economy is improving.
For example, students attending a public, four-year college paid an average of $1,180 more in tuition this year than they did four years ago, in 2009-10, after financial aid was taken into account - even though colleges raised their prices this year by "the smallest percentage increase in over 30 years," or 2.9 percent on average. Overall, students paid an average of $3,120 after aid.
At private, nonprofit colleges, the amount paid by students after financial aid rose nearly as much on average - $910 - in half the time, since 2011-12. Students paid an average of $12,460 after aid.
Students are paying more because financial aid - education grants that do not have to be paid back - has not kept pace with rising tuition. In the last decade, financial aid for each full-time student rose by an average of 54 percent, from $9,700 to $14,980.
That's according to the latest "Trends in College Pricing," one of three new studies packed with data about what college costs, what students owe the bank after graduating and what they earn after getting a job.
"A college education is an unparalleled investment, but there is no college opportunity without college affordability," said David Coleman, president of the College Board, a not-for-profit education advocacy group that oversees the SAT and other college entrance exams. It released all three studies Wednesday.
"Trends in Student Aid," the second study, shows that fewer students are taking out education loans; borrowing dropped by 6 percent between 2011 and 2012.
That drop followed a year in which the average amount owed by graduates increased to $26,500 in 2011, up from $25,300 in 2010.
"Overcoming financial barriers to higher education remains a significant challenge for the nation's low- and moderate-income families," said Justin Draeger, president of theNational Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, which surveyed its members to help the College Board compile its data.
Draeger noted that while borrowing is down and student debt is somewhat steady, families who aren't wealthy "are continuing to shoulder an ever-increasing amount of college costs."
The trends are happening as states have reduced their appropriations to public colleges by 19 percent in the past five years. At the same time, students have flooded into colleges, raising overall enrollment by 11 percent.
Other findings from "Trends in College Pricing":
-- Only about one-third of full-time college students pay full tuition with no financial aid.
-- In 1973 - using 2013 dollars - average tuition and fees at public, four-year colleges was $2,710. In 2013, it was $8,893.
-- In the past five years, average tuition and fees at public, four-year colleges increased by 27 percent.
-- In 1973 - using 2013 dollars - average tuition and fees at private, nonprofit colleges was $10,783. In 2013, the amount was $30,094.
-- In the past five years, average tuition and fees at private, nonprofit colleges increased by 14 percent.

Briefly explain the article, what happened and how it affects you. Your response should be a minimum of 5-8 sentences. This articles is about how colleges are expensive and many cannot afford to pay for school. They seek out help and for years now the prices have go up and down. Financial aid has made college possible but still is a burden to the families who are not wealthy. Even thought there is help to pay for school there is still a huge problem. They are becoming impacted. Many students are trying to get into college because it has become a bit easier to pay for school. This has made getting into college even more difficult then it already is. This is extremely important to know about because for one we are all seniors applying to schools who are for the most part impacted in most majors that we plan on going into. Second of all we now have to make our selves more noticeable to get accepted to schools that we want to go to and that can be very difficult. This affects us students applying to colleges in every way possible.

Government shut down
Well, if you own a small business and needed a loan from the government, you'll have to wait, depending on how long this lasts. If you were planning to buy a house and needed a federal loan, you'll have to wait. If you're a veteran, you might have to make a few trips to the mailbox before that check arrives.
Don't go to work if you're a federal employee. You're on furlough. (Offer not valid for workers in "critical services," such as air traffic controllers, hazardous waste handlers and food inspectors.) Do take some time to celebrate. In previous shutdowns, everyone who stayed home was paid retroactively after peace returned to Washington.

A Thinking Women
I am not happy with society and it's pressure to do things and be people that you aren't. All thy media forces all women to not love themselves or appreciate their person. Yesterday we had a discussion about this and many girls in the class room said they we not beautiful, they don't feel beautiful and I believe that we are all beautiful. It may not be a physical thing but can be inside of you and I think it's better to be beautiful inside because you are real, the physical is only temporary.
I would try to change this by letting every girl I encounter know that they are beautiful. Explain that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No on will notice your beauty unless you know it's there and let it shine through.

Right to think
I think that it is a must to be able to think differently! If we all thought the same nothing new will ever come about. For example ideas, to create things like inventions, new technologies, even simple things.
If we all had the same beliefs the world would be dull. Yes, it could help with current conflict. It could be lowered but if you think about it there will always be conflict, no matter what. It's in our human nature. I feel like life wouldn't be great it would just be okay. Different is not always bad. It can teach you new things like culture and open your eyes to change. There are many things out there that you can learn. It can make you better as a person.

Current Events #1
3. This article is interesting to me because not only did many people at the World Trade Center get killed those who were lucky enough to survive and help those to survive were punished with life long illnesses and diseases that will always remind them of that attack. This article is also important because it lets us be aware 9/11 never really ended, many people relive it every day. We need to be aware that those who suffer from cancers and illnesses need help to pay for all the damage that has been caused to them.
